On December 10th, the eyes of the world turn to Stockholm for the yearly Nobel Prize award ceremony and banquet. It is crucial for esteemed organizations like the Nobel Foundation to take a stance in safeguarding civilian lives and opposing violations of international law. Similar to the retraction of invitations to Russian and Belarusian ambassadors due to their actions in Ukraine, we urge the Nobel Foundation to adhere to its policies and values by distancing itself from the ongoing crimes against international humanitarian law being committed in Gaza and on the West Bank.
The current humanitarian situation in Gaza is disastrous. In the past eight weeks, more than 15.000 people have been killed, of which more than 6,000 are children. 1,7 million Gazans have been displaced, and there is a vast shortage of water, food, fuel, electricity and medical supplies. Attacks have targeted residential buildings, schools and hospitals as well as refugee camps. It has been reported that over 200 healthcare workers and over 60 journalists have been killed, as well as renowned Palestinian authors being imprisoned, injured and killed. The situation in the remaining hospitals is especially dire with testimonies from doctors on the ground including having to perform amputations and cesarean sections without anesthesia.
The Secretary-General of the UN, António Guterres, stated on November 6th that “Gaza is becoming a graveyard for children”. He has also stated that the war in Gaza has become the deadliest in the history of the UN, in terms of the number of UN workers killed, so far reaching over 100.
Human rights organizations worldwide have been calling for a ceasefire for weeks, bringing attention to the actions of the Israeli government and their breaches of international law. Hundreds of lawyers from around the globe have gathered in filing a case against leaders of the Israeli government with the International Criminal Court, to hold them responsible for war crimes.
No matter the conflict, civilian lives must always be protected, international law must always be respected and breaches thereof must be condemned. There is no room to question the urgent need for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza.
In light of the above, we demand that the Nobel Foundation remove representatives of the Israeli government from the guest list of the Nobel Prize award ceremonies and banquet on December 10th.
